Course Description
Prevent electrical incidents in the workplace by building the knowledge and skills needed to identify hazards, assess risk and implement effective control measures. Based on NFPA 70E, this course focuses on establishing electrically safe work conditions, managing shock and arc flash hazards, and making informed decisions when energized work cannot be avoided.
You will learn how to develop and implement an electrical safety program, apply lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, conduct risk assessments and implement protective measures to manage electrical hazards. The course also covers how to determine when energized electrical work is justified and how to control that work through a formal energized work permit process.
What You Will Learn
- Identify electrical hazards and apply risk assessment principles to determine appropriate control measures.
- Establish electrically safe work conditions through proper energy isolation, lockout/tagout procedures and verification of absence of voltage.
- Manage electrical hazards using shock and arc flash risk assessments, approach boundaries, PPE and electrical system awareness tools.
- Evaluate and authorize energized electrical work using defined justification criteria, risk assessments and permit requirements.

Instruction Method
Online-Instructor-Led: As a virtual learner, you’ll receive all the benefits of face-to-face instruction, eliminate travel cost and time, while learning in a structured way whether at work, at home or at another convenient location. To participate fully, you will need a computer with audio/video capability and a reliable internet connection.
During this four-week online course, you will connect with your peers in group discussions, participate in interactive learning activities, review instructional videos and complete assignments.
Each Thursday throughout the duration of the course, your instructor will hold a 90-minute online meeting from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. CT. These meetings are designed to facilitate group work, share expert knowledge, answer questions, provide feedback and offer active learning support.

Instructor(s)
Wesley L. Wheeler, SMP, CESCP, MSP
Wesley L. Wheeler, SMP, CESCP, MSP, serves as Executive Director of Safety for the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), a role he has held since 2014. He brings more than 46 years of experience in the electrical industry.
Wheeler is a BCSP Safety Management Professional, NFPA Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional and NASP Master Safety Professional. He serves on the Board of Trustees for the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention (CIASP) and represents NECA on several national safety and electrical code committees, including ANSI/ASSP A10 and NFPA technical committees for NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E.
Prior to joining NECA, Wheeler owned Wheeler Safety Services, Inc., where he worked as a safety director and consultant. He is also an OSHA Construction Outreach Instructor, contributed to Electrical Training Alliance OSHA workbooks and holds a Florida State Certified Electrical Contractor License.

Jerry E. Revera, CSP, is the Director of Safety for Washington, DC NECA. He has a Master of Engineering in Safety Engineering Management from UAB. With three decades of experience in occupational safety and health within the electrical construction industry, Jerry is a passionate advocate for advancing occupational safety and health management systems.

Cancellation Policy
- We will grant full refunds to those who submit written requests within 10 business days of the start date of the course by emailing customerservice@assp.org.
- Learners who register but do not attend their course, or who attempt to cancel after the deadline, will not receive a refund.
- If learning resources such as standards or videos are included in the registration price of your course and you access those resources using your ASSP My Learning account prior to the course’s start date, you will be ineligible for a refund.
- We charge a $25 processing fee for substitutions.
- Submit substitutions in writing within 10 business days of the start date of the course by emailing customerservice@assp.org. If pricing for the new attendee changes the total cost of attending the event, we will charge or refund you the difference.
- We reserve the right to cancel any course at any time and to substitute faculty should unforeseen events occur.
- If, for any reason, we must cancel a course or event, liability is limited solely to the registration fees paid.
- We are not responsible for other expenses incurred, including travel and accommodation fees for in-person courses.
